Acanthosis nigricans (Why those dark patches seem permanent)

Hello everyone, Due to my desire to *glow up* I decided to find out the causes and treatment options for dark arm pit, dark groin or any hyperpigmentation of skin folds. This topic is important because a lot of people may be affected but unaware of it's health implications.

Acanthosis nigricans appear as hyperpigmentation of skin folds (armpit, neck, groin), hands and various other parts of the body such as the back. The skin around the affected area feels velvety and may itch. AN is not contagious but may be a sign of an underlying health problem. There are a lot of DIY's online that recommend a myriad of quick fixes such as lemon, in fact some people go as far as trying to scrub the dark patch away.

It is important to note that some fungal infections may mimic AN so it is very important you see your dermatologist right away. AN may be a sign of insulin resistance, some cancers, high cholesterol levels, and prolonged use of oral corticosteroids. The darkened area of the skin will fade away if the underlying health issue is tackled.

In summary.... see your dermatologist or doctor immediately if you notice these symptoms because it may be a red flag.

Love you all😙

PS: AN = Acanthosis nigricans.
